Top Christian Mystery Authors

Being a book addict, one of the stories I always love are those with mystery-suspense genres. However, I often value stories that have less sex and offensive language and not-so-violent plots.
That’s how I got hooked into Christian suspense books. It always has the heart-racing but not too blasphemous stories that I’m looking for.
I’ve compiled some Christian mystery authors that have always been on my top list. If you’re like me that loves the types of plot mentioned above, then you should check these authors out.
Irene Hannon
Irene Hannon is an American bestselling author of more than 50 novels. Her forte is writing inspirational romance and romantic suspense novels. She received many awards like RITA Award for Romance with Spiritual Elements.
During an interview, she was asked to share how her faith impacts her fictional stories. She said,
“I write from a Christian worldview, so all my stories are told through the lens of faith. Overt faith content tends to be on the subtle side, especially in my suspense novels, because I prefer to show my characters living their faith rather than talking about it.”
Sidney Sheldon
Alright, I don’t want to be biased here but Sheldon’s been my favorite author ever since. His book, Tell Me Your Dreams, was actually the first novel I’ve read.
Sidney Sheldon is an American writer and producer. At the age of 50, he started writing best-selling romantic suspense novels. Truly, he is the master of storytelling.
Sheldon’s writings were fueled by his depression, and faith to overcome it.
Depression started to hit him at the age of 17 where he tried to kill himself. According to him, what he always wanted in his stories is for the protagonists to always survive. Just like what he did.
I’ve been collecting all his books all my life. All his mystery-suspense books that I’ve read like Tell Me Your Dreams, After the Darkness, and Nothing Lasts Forever was such a perfect work.
There’s something about his works that once you start reading them, you’ll never want to put it down. Whenever you want to stop at the end of the chapter, it will leave you hanging at the edge of the cliff. So, you’ll just start reading another chapter again.
Dee Henderson
Henderson is a New York Times best-selling author of Christian fiction novels. Her works are a mix of mystery, romance, scripture, and people’s lives with God.
Although she’s relatively new in writing novels, she has already won a few awards.
Henderson is very successful with her novels yet it seems that she’s not that active on social media. According to her, she likes to write, read, hang out with her parents, and spend time with God. And for her, that’s already a busy enough life.
Dani Pettrey
Pettrey was praised by Dee Henderson as “a name to look for in romantic suspense”. She has sold more than 400,000 copies of her novels. As I can see from some of her books, it feels like it’s combined with page-turning adrenaline of adventure-filled suspense, and a happy-ever-after of a romance.
In an interview on her book launch of Love and Bullets, she said,
“I actually find it easier to write about crime and danger because I’m a Christian author. Writing about the two allows about the strong contrast that exists between good and evil, darkness and light. Faith and the beauty of Christ reveal just how sinful man can be and our deep need for a Savior exists. It’s through danger and a pressure-cooker that a person’s true faith and character is revealed and can truly shine as a testament to Jesus and the work of His Holy Spirit.”
Pettrey is actually on my “what-to-read-next” list. I’ve read some of the excerpts from her book, and I already loved it! Her writings are pretty awesome. You should try it!
Nancy Mehl
Nancy Mehl is an author of faith-filled stories of suspense and mystery. She won the American Christian Fiction Writers (ACFW) Mystery Book of the Year Award in 2009.
During an interview with her book launch of Blind Betrayal, Mehl was asked why the story is such a powerful way to communicate truth. She answered,
“Well, it worked very well for Jesus, didn’t it? Christ told parables. I believe there can be a powerful anointing on our writing. I pray over each book and ask God to use it to touch people. I want to give a great story, but I also want to leave them with something even more important. The message that God loves them and has a plan for their lives.”
