A Collection of Prayers to St. Anne
Published March 25, 2022
As the mother of Mary, St. Anne is venerated in the Catholic Church as the grandmother of Jesus. She is considered the patron of housewives, grandmothers, mothers, educators, women in labor, as well as unmarried women, and those suffering from infertility. In some traditions, St. Anne is also the patron of miners, sailors, and a protector from storms.
Aside from giving birth to the Blessed Virgin, nothing much is known about her life. The only mention of her name was in the Apocryphal gospels written by early Christians.
According to these non-scriptural writings, Saint Anne was born in Bethlehem in the district of Judea. She and her husband Joachim were very devout but they had a hard time conceiving a child. So she made a promise to God that she would dedicate her firstborn to the Lord’s service.
The writings then went on to describe that the couple was visited by an Angel who told Saint Anne that she would give birth to a most wondrous child. That child would grow up to be the Blessed Virgin Mary.
Though there was no recorded interaction between her and Jesus himself, her role in the Salvation story cannot be discounted.
If you want to start a devotional to Jesus’ grandmother, here’s a collection of prayers to St. Anne:
Daily Prayer to St. Anne
Good St. Anne, you were especially favored by God to be the mother of the most holy Virgin Mary, the Mother of our Savior. By your power with your most pure daughter and with her divine Son, kindly obtain for us the grace and the favor we now seek. Please secure for us also forgiveness of our past sins, the strength to perform faithfully our daily duties, and the help we need to persevere in the love of Jesus and Mary. Amen.
Morning Prayer to St. Anne
Lord Jesus, a new day is breaking and the munificence of your power
subtly dawns upon me. In the freshness of every morning, I sense another parcel of your Creation, which is but the overflow upon us of your superabundant life and love.
I take this day as a gift from You, O Lord, and readily accept whatever it will bring me: sunshine or rain, gladness or pain. I hasten to thank You for all the favors and graces You are going to
shower on me during this coming day. I give You thanks for all my brothers and sisters who fail to do so, as if a bird could refuse to sing or a flower to smell good.
My prayer soars to You, O Lord, in order to make every moment of this day a praise to You, an act of adoration, a homage from my heart, all my soul, all my mind and all my strength. I, likewise, want to love my neighbor.
May this day be a seed of eternal life!
Saint Ann, I love and venerate you. Lend me a hand with your daughter, the Virgin Mary, so that I may avoid sin, love my God and serve my neighbor.
Amen.
Devotional Prayer to St. Anne
Hail, O Good St. Ann, who first responded to the needs of Mary, Mother of our Savior and Queen of Angels. Hail to you and to your husband, St. Joachim, who watched over her infancy, presented her to the Lord in the Temple, and, according to your promise, consecrated her to the service of Almighty God.
Hail St. Ann, good mother! I rejoice in the marvels you continually perform because they encourage all to seek your heavenly intercession. And so with faith and confidence, I now place these needs before you, (mention your request).
Good St. Ann, by the great power God has given you, show yourself my mother, my consoler, my advocate. Implore for me from Divine Providence the guidance and protection I need through life. Console me in my trails. Strengthen me in my struggles. Help me bear all my crosses. Deliver me from danger during times of trouble. Assist me at the hour of death and open to me the gates of Paradise. Amen.
Prayer for Assistance in Needs
I choose you, Saint Ann, as my refuge in all necessities.
I confide my temporal needs to your intercession. I trust that there is no sickness or infirmity for which you cannot obtain a cure. I know there is no situation, however difficult or desperate it may seem that you cannot settle.
Most importantly, I know that my spiritual welfare is even more precious than that of my body. Please help me, Good Saint Ann, to have a great love for my Lord and Savior, your Grandson, Jesus. Give me goodwill and purify my intentions. Amen.
Prayer for Intercession
Glorious St. Ann, filled with compassion for those who invoke thee, and with love for those who suffer, heavily laden with the weight of my troubles, I cast myself at thy feet and humbly beg of thee to take the present affair which I recommend to you under your special protection. Please recommend it to your Daughter, the Blessed Virgin Mary, and lay it before the throne of Jesus, so that He may bring it to a happy issue. Do not cease interceding for me until my request is granted.
(Here ask for the favor you wish to obtain)
Above all, obtain for me the grace of one day of beholding my God face to face, and with you and Mary and all the Saints, praise and blessing Him to all eternity.
Good St. Anne, mother of her who is our life, our sweetness, and our hope, pray to her for us and obtain our request. (Repeat 3 times)
Prayer for Healing
Saint Ann, beloved patroness, I come to you with confidence as a sick person, not only because you are powerful and kind, but also because you have experienced life’s oppressive trials.
Over the centuries, you have obtained from your Grandson Jesus instant relief for countless infirm and sick people. Pilgrims to Saint Ann have never ceased thanking you for such favors.
At this moment, you know I am suffering. But, I want to unite myself with the suffering Christ. I offer my pains to the Lord so that His redemption be accomplished in all the hearts.
I count on your intercession, Saint Ann, for courage and peace of mind. Do implore God to heal me, for everything is possible to Him and He answers your prayer.
I pray to you also on behalf of all the suffering and sick people of the world, especially those I know and assist personally.
Amen.
Prayer for Sanctity
Good Saint Anne, obtain for me an increase of faith in the great mystery of the Holy Eucharist. Help me to see in this great sacrament Christ our High Priest, making real for me the saving grace of His death on the cross; feeding my soul with His Flesh and Blood so that I may live in Him and He in me; producing the unity of the people of God and gathering His Church together. By your powerful intercession with God, help me to center my life around the altar that I may inherit the promise of The Lord: “He who eats my flesh and drinks my blood, as life everlasting.” Amen.
A Parent’s Prayer to St. Anne
Saint Ann, you know my concerns as a parent and/or grandparent. So many dangers threaten young people today. Will those children I love get a good education? Will they find fulfilling jobs? Will they follow the ways of your Grandson?
Because I am worried about the future of my children and/or grandchildren, I entrust them to you, Saint Ann. Take good care of them. Keep them healthy and always on the right path, faithful to God’s commandments and love. If they have strayed from His teachings and Church, please help them to return.
Do for them what you did so well for your daughter, Mary. Teach them how to find true happiness in loving the Lord and their neighbor.
My hope and prayer is based on the goodness of God. I trust in Him to protect my children and/or grandchildren whom I love more than myself. Please intercede for them and for all the children of the world.
Amen.
Prayer for Grandchildren
Saint Ann, I am an anxious grandparent who worries and prays for my grandchildren. They are confronted with a life full of obstacles, dangers, and difficult issues. They are not always aware of them. I beg you to take them under your maternal protection because you took such good care of your Grandson, Jesus.
Together with your husband, Saint Joachim, you taught your daughter, Mary, to observe the Commandments and to love God and neighbor. Now I entrust my grandchildren to you.
How delighted you were when your Grandson Jesus was born! Out of that same love for Him, please extend your protection to my grandchildren. Some are still young while others have grown up and are facing life’s responsibilities. Bless them all. Help them discover the importance of prayer, the beauty of Christian values and love of the Lord! Keep them from danger, harm, temptations, and all obstacles to their true happiness!
Good Saint Ann, please keep all grandparents and grandchildren in your loving, motherly care.
Amen.
Prayer for Family
Beloved Grandmother of Jesus, Beloved Mother of Mary, the Queen of Heaven, Good Saint Ann, please take our family and all our dear ones under your special care.
Obtain for us the virtues you instilled in the heart of Mary, destined to be God’s Mother. With your holy husband, Saint Joachim, you have become wonderful models for Christian parents.
Help us to imitate your example in our families. Help us to make our lives reflect the peace and joy, the serenity and holiness which will show the world that we believe that God lives among us. Grant us to so live in God’s Kingdom on earth, as to merit a place in His eternal Kingdom, where our family will be united never to be parted again.
Amen
Prayer for a Happy Marriage
Saint Ann, make us understand the beauty and dignity of Christian marriage! May the spouses above all, and the young too appreciate the greatness of the vocation to marriage according to God’s plan.
God has created man and woman with a natural inclination to unite in one flesh and to procreate children destined to live happy.
In this world, where so many have lost the notion of God and belittle the supernatural and even the natural values of life, do pray, Saint Ann, that spouses may find again the true way to love, happiness and life.
Would that they were united in genuine affection and become day by day a better sacrament, a more perfect sign of God’s love for mankind and of Christ’s love for His Church! Protect them against misunderstanding and separation! Make them responsible educators of their children!
Bless us, Saint Ann, bless all the married persons, especially those who are facing serious problems.
Amen
Prayer for a Safe Childbirth
Saint Ann, many women are grateful to you for a happy childbirth. They have prayed to you with confidence and you have heard their prayer.
Many mothers, suffering like you from temporary infertility, turned to you for help and were granted a happy pregnancy.
Others feared for their life while giving birth. But, you have calmed their hearts and today they are happy with their children.
Some were advised to resort to pernicious abortion. But, they trusted in you and have refused this rampant crime.
With the faith and confidence of a child, I come to put myself under your protection. I pray today and will pray to you every day for myself and for this lovely little being I am bearing within me.
Obtain for me a trouble-free childbirth. Protect both of us! Keep us in good health! Bless also my husband and all my family.
Saint Ann, grant a special protection to this little child about to be born. I consecrate it to the Lord and your daughter Mary.
Amen.
Prayer for Restoration of Health
Saint Ann, beginning in the Middle Ages, Christians invoked you to intercede with our Lord on their behalf. They begged you to obtain a cure for their sickness or infirmity.
Now, I come to you with faith and confidence and ask you for help. I am afflicted and distressed with my illness and am suffering. The fear of an ominous future drains what is left of my hope. I worry for myself and for those I love. I know you can help me recover both health and hope.
You, Saint Ann, are so powerful and merciful and I trust in you. I trust that if you intercede for me, things will go better. It will become easier for me to praise God, to be generous, and to serve others thanks to my restored health.
I make this request for the health of my body and for the health of my soul. I also pray for all those who suffer on earth, for all the sick confined to bed, at home or in the hospital.
Come to my aid, Good Saint Ann, and work for all of us today, the wonders you have wrought in the past.
Amen.
